What You Need to Know Before Ordering Embroidery Hoops

No matter which embroidery machine you run, there are three things you need to get right before ordering a hoop: hoop size, sewing field, and hoop length. Get any one wrong and the hoop either won’t fit your machine or won’t hold your design properly. Here’s how each one works.

1. Hoop Size

The hoop is the frame — plastic or wooden — that holds your fabric taut so the machine can stitch with even tension. Hoops come in round, square, and rectangular shapes. The most common sizes are 4″×4″, 5″×7″, 6″×6″, and 8″×12″.

One thing to watch: hoop sizes are measured in millimeters, inches, or centimeters depending on the supplier. When you order, confirm which unit is being used so you don’t end up with the wrong size.

2. Sewing Field (Embroidery Area)

The sewing field is the area programmed into your machine’s software — the boundary beyond which it won’t stitch. It’s always smaller than the hoop itself, and how much smaller depends on your machine.

If your design is larger than the sewing field, most machines will simply refuse to run. At that point you’d have to shrink the design or split it — and splitting a design is rarely worth the hassle. Your digitizer can usually recommend a hoop size and sewing field that matches your design from the start.

3. Hoop Length (Arm Spacing)

Hoop length is the total span of the hoop including the left and right arms. This varies by machine brand, and it’s the spec most people forget to check. Here’s a quick reference for common commercial machines:

  • Tajima: usually 36 cm (11″)
  • Happy: usually 36 cm (11″)
  • Brother: usually 36 cm (11″)
  • Barudan: usually 36 cm (11″)
  • SWF: 40 cm (15.7″), 45 cm (17.7″), or 50 cm (19.7″)
  • Melco / Amaya: 40 cm (15.7″) or 45 cm (17.7″)

Even within the same brand, arm spacing can differ between models — so if you’re not sure, measure it yourself or check with your machine provider before ordering.

The Short Version

When you order a hoop, have three things ready: your machine brand and model, the hoop size you need, and your arm spacing. With those three, any knowledgeable supplier can get you the right hoop the first time.
